3 Rev William Holmes - Strabane, Urney and Antrim

In researching my ancestor the Rev William Holmes of Strabane I have begun to explore his relations. The Fasti of the Irish Presbyterian Church, 1613-1840 by James McConnell is available online at FamilySearch. It contains the following entries which indicate that the Rev William Holmes of Urney and his son, the Rev William Holmes of Antrim were cousins:

b. nr. Donoghmorc, Co. Donegal, 1663 : emigrated to New England : returned 1691 : reed, by Laggan Presby., 29 July, 1691 : ord. Strabane, 21 Dec., 1692 : marr. Catherine, dau. of Rev. Robt. Craghead, 26 Sept., 1693 : elected Clerk of Presb"., Oct., 1697 : Modr. of Gen. Syn., 1708 : res. 15 June, 1714 : Gen Syn. gave a testimonial reluctantly "for a worthy brotherin company of his bro.-in-law, Rev. Thos. Craghead, sailed from Londonderry in "Thomas & Jane arr. at Boston first week of Oct., 1714 : officiated at Shelmark [Chilmark], Martha's Vineyard : d. 27 June. 1746. Robert Holmes, his eldest son, b. 23 July, 1694, became captain of a vessel trading between England & America : appears to have been the agent who apprised the people of Laggan of the opportun¬ ities in Amer.: there is a record that he sailed for Ire. 13 April, 1718, and that his ship returned " full of passengers about the middle of Oct." of Mrs. Rowatt: res. Jan., 1698.: d. Oct., 1734.

Rev. Wm. Holmes, Antrim (1730-50) was a son.

Ordained Antrim (1st) 7th September 1730

A staunch advocate of subscription

Died 1st May 1750

Note – General Stewart, Lurgan was a grandson.
