Rev William Holmes of Antrim (1730-1750)

The basic facts regarding the Rev William Holmes of Antrim from the Fasti of the Irish Presbyterian Church:

#546 Holmes, William
Son of the Rev. William Holmes (d.1734) of Urney
Educated Glasgow  MA 1721
Licensed Strabane Presbytery, Co Tyrone 1728
Ordained Antrim (1st) 7th September 1730
A staunch advocate of subscription
Died 1st May 1750
Note – General Stewart, Lurgan was a grandson.

More about his ministry can be found in Historical and Literary Memorials of Presbyterianism in Ireland.

Holmes married Elizabeth McDowell, daughter of Benjamin McDowell of Rathmore. Their marriage agreement can be found in the registry of deeds (RD 138/435/93793)

William Holmes and Elizabeth McDowell marriage

The lands of Rathmore and Ballyrobert mentioned in the marriage agreement were left to Elizabeth by her father, Benjamin, whose 1725 will is also recorded in the registry of deeds (RD 55/512/38065).

Benjamin McDowel of Rathmore, Co Antrim 1725 will

An executor to the will was John Allen of Drumnadarragh [Drumadarragh] who will feature in a future post. He was the son-in-law of John Smith of Dumadarragh whose 1706 will mentions John as well as son-in-laws Samuel Holmes and William Galt.

Nathaniel Holmes appears in several of the deeds involving the Reverend Holmes as does Nathaniel's son William Holmes of Antrim, merchant. It seems likely that they are related to the Reverend. Nathaniel is probably the Nathaniel Holms of Antrim, mercht, whose 1750 will we find in the PRONI name index.

The Rev William Holmes and Elizabeth McDowell apparently had only one child, a daughter Isabella Holmes who married Robert Stewart of Lurgan. Their marriage agreement can be found online (RD 194/343/129723). They were the parents of several children: Major General Robert Stewart (this is the "General Stewart, Lurgan" mentioned as a grandson in the Fasti article #546 on the Rev William Holmes.), Lt Col Benjamin Stewart, William, Isabella and Martha Maria. Robert's 1783 will (PRONI T700/1) also mentions a son-in-law William McConchy. He was the son of the William McConchy found in several deeds involving the Rev William Holmes of Antrim as well as Isabella.

Robert Stewart of Lurgan 1783 will

Martha Maria Stewart, daughter of Robert Stewart and Isabella Homes, is probably more well known as Martha Maria Magee, wife of the Rev William Magee. She was the founder of Magee College. An interesting article, “The Collegiad” or Will of Widow Magee, can be found online at the Presbyterian Historical Society of Ireland.

3 Rev William Holmes - Strabane, Urney and Antrim

In researching my ancestor the Rev William Holmes of Strabane I have begun to explore his relations. The Fasti of the Irish Presbyterian Church, 1613-1840 by James McConnell is available online at FamilySearch. It contains the following entries which indicate that the Rev William Holmes of Urney and his son, the Rev William Holmes of Antrim were cousins:

Rev William Homes of Strabane overseer to 1703 will of James Hamilton

Last month I was able to visit PRONI for the first time. This wasn't a research trip per se. I was in Belfast on holiday, but I was able to spend much of one day exploring the records. One of the items I found there involved my ancestor the Rev William Homes of Strabane. In his 1703 will (PRONI D623/B/3/6) James Hamilton of Strabane Merchant asks that "William Maxwell of Strabane aforesaid merchant, Oliver McCausland of Rash Esq., Mr William Homes, minister of Strabane and my son-in-law Thomas Willson merchant to be overseers that this my will be duly performed and to give their best assistance and advice to my said executrix in the management thereof."

James Hamilton of Strabane 1703 will

Hamiton is one of the very few people from Strabane that are mentioned in the Reverend's diary which seems to commence in 1715 with his move to Chilmark on Martha's Vineyard, but does record the births and deaths of certain family members and others in Ireland prior to their emigration. "Aug 27th 1703 - Mr James Hamilton Senr Straban departed this life, he had been long ill he was a man very affectionat and kind to his friends in his dealings with men and that gave evidence of true piety especially in his last sickness, he left his family in tolerable good circumstances. He died about two of the clock in the morning and was buried the Lord's day following."

It is probably this same James Hamilton who was one of a small group of people that attended the wedding of the Reverend and his wife Katherine Craighead as recorded in the Reverend's diary: "Mr. William Homes [the diarist] and Katheren Craghead were marryed Sept 26th 1693 by the Revd. Mr. Craghead of Londonderry in his own house about 8 at night in the presence of Mr. Thomas Craghead, Mr. James Hamilton, John Wilson, James Smith and his spouse, and those of Mr. Cragheads own family. It was a Tuesday."

Reverend Holmes also appears in the records of other families named in James Hamilton's will. William Maxwell and his daughter Mary Maxwell both left Homes bequests in their 1709 wills (PRONI T581/3 p,192,202), and Homes was a witness to and named overseer in the 1693 will of Thomas Willson's father, Thomas Wilson Sr. (PRONI T1026/6 p.20). This begs the question as to if the John Wilson who attended the Reverend's wedding was John Wilson, brother of Thomas Jr?

The diary of the Rev William Homes of Strabane is available online at the Congregational Library and Archives

Holmes of Coleraine

I have been interested in the Holmes family of Coleraine for some time. They fist came to my attention while rearching Samuel Craighead of London who was the brother-in-law of the Rev. William Homes of Strabane. In 1734 William Galt of Coleraine and William Richardson of Summerseal, Co. Londonderry took over a lease from Samuel Craighead.

Memorial of deed dated 10 Feb 1734 Deed witnessed by Hercules Hyland, Esq. of Castleroe, Co. Londonderry, deceased, and John McAlester of Coleraine. Memorial witnessed by John McAlester and Robert Patrick and dated 10 Jun 1752. (RD 149/543/103791)

I believe that this was the William Galt of Coleraine who wrote his will in 1759 (proved 1776). His brothers-in-law included Hercules Hyland and Samuel Smith, jr. of Belfast. [Note: the Smiths and Galts were interelated and the name "John Galt Smith" is seen frequently in the records]

The name William Galt appears in other Holmes records. In his will dated 20 Feb 1706/7 of James Smith of Drumadaragh, parish of Dunegar, Co. Antrim, dryer. mentions son-in-laws, William Galt, Samuel Holmes and John Allen, daughter widow Ferguson.

The will of Jennet Holmes, widow, of Belfast dated July 30, 1737 mentions sons, Hugh, Robert, Samuel, John, James, cousin Samuel Smith sr, grandson Thomas Holmes, grandaughter Jennet or Jane Holmes, granddaughter Mary Holmes, cousin William Galt, cousin Margaret Allen and her daughter Ann Allen, cousin Mary Ferguson and her daughter Margaret Andrew

In her book Belfast Merchant Families in the Seveteenth Century, Jean Agnew states that the Galts of Coleraine probably originated in Irvine, Ayrshire, and their is a strong body of evidence to support this. Interestingly there are a number of Holmes / Galt connections in Irvine and the neighboring parish of Dreghorn.

The testament of John Galt aka "Earl" was proved in 1656. His wife was Marion Holmes. William Holmes in Dreghorn and William Holmes in Stain appear to be overseers and the witnesses include Ninian Holmes son of Hew Holmes of Dreghorn. John Galt aka "Earl" appears in the 1617 testament of Lawrence Legatt of Warrix in Dreghorn and the 1627 testament of John Galt of Tempilhous, Dreghorn. John Galt, jr of Tempilhouse married Janet Holmes. Their son Hew Galt married Marion Holmes, daughter of John Holmes of Meiklestane.

Hew Holmes of Dreghorn and John Holmes both appear in the 1624 testamant of John Galt of Townend, Dreghorn.

Robert Galt of Heigate, Dreghorn appears in the 1608 testamant of Ninian Holmes of Irvine, and James Holmes of Irvine is mentined in Robert's own testament of 1632. The testament of Robert's wife Agness Schaw was proved in 1638. John Galt aka "Earl" was cautioner.

In the Protocol Book of Arthur Hamilton, Irvine for period 1664-1674 I recently found an entry dated 1668 for Ninian Holmes of Irvine and his wife Marion Galt. I am working on deciphering the handwriting and translating from latin, but so far I can make out the following:…… William Galt son…late William Galt in Bangor in County of Down, and the Kingdom of Ireland………. said William ….….. late William Galt .. father …. And there … Hugh Boyd…said William Galt son … said late William Galt … in Auchingavie [Agivey in Achindowie near Coleraine?] in county of Londonderry in the kingdom of Ireland … hereditary …. … in favor of Ninian Holmes merchant Burgess in said burgh of Irvine and Marion Galt his spouse ……. in all and whole the aforesaid William Galt ….

12 Jun 1713

William Holms born in Irvine to William Holms and Jane Galt

Transcipts of the various testaments, etc. mentioned above can be found in the documents on this site. There are many other interesting connections, but the long and short is that I suspect that the the Holmes of Coleraine likely originated in the Irvine / Dreghorn area
